A-10 Warthog
US Air Force - Close air support - Aircraft Recognition Playing Cards
The legendary Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately known as the Warthog! Designed during the Cold War and entering service in 1977, the A-10 is the only US Air Force aircraft ever built solely for the Close Air Support (CAS) mission, providing a tough, low-and-slow presence for ground troops. Built around its massive 30mm GAU-8 Avenger cannon - famous for the distinctive "BRRRRRT!" sound - the Warthog's titanium-armored "bathtub" cockpit and redundant systems have earned it a legendary reputation for survivability in every conflict from the Gulf War to Iraq, Afghanistan, and recent operations against ISIS in Syria. While the United States Air Force has begun the process of retiring the aging fleet in favor of newer platforms, the Warthog remains an active and proven asset, with pilots still flying combat missions overseas and participating in major training exercises, cementing its legacy as one of aviation's most iconic and effective "tank busters" until its eventual final retirement.
