The Boeing AH-64 Apache is the most combat-proven attack helicopter in history. Since entering US Army service in 1986, it has participated in virtually every major American military engagement: Panama, Gulf War, Somalia, the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Iraq, accumulating more combat flight hours than any comparable platform in the world. Designed as a tank-killer for the anticipated Soviet armored thrust into Western Europe, the Apache combined agility, firepower, and survivability in a package that set the standard for dedicated attack helicopter design globally.

The Apache's weapons suite centers on the AGM-114 Hellfire missile and the M230 chain gun, with the AH-64D/E variants adding the Longbow millimeter-wave fire control radar housed in a distinctive mast-mounted radome above the rotor, enabling the crew to detect and engage targets behind terrain features without exposing the aircraft. The current AH-64E Apache Guardian incorporates expanded digital connectivity, improved engine performance, and the ability to control unmanned aerial systems from the cockpit. More than 2,400 Apaches have been built, and the platform serves with over a dozen nations. As of 2025 it remains the primary attack helicopter of the US Army, with a service life expected to extend well into the 2030s.
