B-1 Lancer Poster - Supersonic Strategic Bomber

The Rockwell B-1B Lancer, universally known as the "Bone" (a phonetic compression of B-One), has one of the most tortured development histories in American aviation, and one of the most successful operational careers. Originally designed in the 1970s as a supersonic low-level nuclear penetrator to replace the B-52, the program was cancelled by President Carter in 1977 only to be revived by President Reagan and redesigned as the B-1B. The new variant traded some supersonic performance for dramatically increased conventional weapons capacity, entering service in 1986 as a long-range, low-altitude penetrating bomber.

The Lancer's distinctive variable-geometry swing wings, swept back for high-speed flight and extended for takeoff, landing, and low-speed cruising, give it an aggressive, predatory profile that stands apart from any other aircraft in the US inventory. In combat, the B-1B proved itself a versatile and devastating conventional strike platform, flying missions in Desert Fox, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, and beyond. The B-1B carried more precision-guided munitions per sortie than any other aircraft during the early years of the Afghanistan campaign. In 2018, B-1s launched AGM-158 JASSMs against Syrian chemical weapons facilities. As the Air Force transitions to the B-21 Raider, B-1 retirements are underway, making this an increasingly historic aircraft still flying active missions.
