Every Recon Cards poster starts from the same original illustration used in our playing card decks, researched from official specs and current photography, then rebuilt at full print resolution so the detail holds up at wall size.
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress entered service in 1955 and, barring a remarkable change in Air Force planning, will still be flying in 2050, making it the longest-serving combat aircraft in the history of military aviation by a considerable margin. Designed at the dawn of the jet age to carry nuclear weapons deep into Soviet territory, the B-52 outlasted the Cold War, the Soviet Union itself, and every aircraft intended to replace it. Eight turbofan engines, a 185-foot wingspan, and a range of over 8,800 miles unrefueled give it a global reach that remains unmatched by any other non-stealth bomber. The nickname "BUFF", Big Ugly Fat Fellow, in polite company, captures its appeal perfectly.
Over seven decades of service, the B-52 has been continuously modernized beyond recognition from its original configuration. The current B-52H variant has been re-engined with more fuel-efficient turbofan engines, equipped with modern precision strike capabilities, and integrated into contemporary network-centric warfare concepts. B-52s have flown combat missions in Vietnam, Gulf War, Allied Force, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. Today they perform conventional strike, maritime patrol, and nuclear deterrence missions. In 2025, the Air Force is midway through a comprehensive modernization program including new commercial engines, a new radar, and upgraded communications, ensuring the B-52 remains operational through at least 2050, when the youngest of today's pilots will have long since retired.
