The Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules first flew in 1954 and has never stopped. More than seven decades later, it remains in continuous production, the longest production run of any military aircraft in history, and serves with over 60 nations in roles ranging from tactical airlift to gunship, tanker, weather reconnaissance, maritime patrol, and Antarctic resupply. The secret to the C-130's longevity is a combination of fundamental soundness in its original design, relentless upgrading, and a genuine absence of anything better at its specific combination of missions: the ability to carry heavy cargo from unimproved short runways close to the battlefield.

The current production variant, the C-130J Super Hercules, is so thoroughly modernized that it shares relatively little with the original beyond its general configuration. New Rolls-Royce AE 2100 turboprop engines with six-blade composite propellers, a fully digital glass cockpit, and modern avionics have transformed performance, the C-130J is significantly faster, more fuel-efficient, and easier to fly than any earlier variant. Special operations versions including the MC-130J Commando II support AFSOC missions including infiltration, exfiltration, and aerial refueling of special operations helicopters. The AC-130 gunship variants, armed with side-firing cannons and precision munitions, have served in every major US combat operation since Vietnam.
