The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III is widely considered the most capable military transport aircraft ever built, a rare design that successfully bridges the gap between strategic and tactical airlift. Large enough to carry an M1 Abrams tank or three Bradley fighting vehicles on intercontinental missions, yet capable of operating from short, austere runways that would be inaccessible to the C-5 Galaxy, the C-17 brought a flexibility to strategic airlift that simply did not previously exist. Entering service in 1993, it replaced both the aging C-141 Starlifter in the strategic airlift role and supplemented the C-130 in tactical operations, eventually becoming the primary workhorse of US Air Force mobility.

The C-17 can operate from runways as short as 3,500 feet with full payload, enabling direct delivery to forward operating bases rather than requiring transshipment through major air hubs. Its thrust reversers can be used while the aircraft is on the ground to back up and reposition, a capability genuinely useful on narrow austere airstrips. Over 279 have been built, serving with the US Air Force and eleven allied nations. Production ended in 2015 with no direct successor in development, making the current fleet irreplaceable in the near term. C-17s have been central to every major US military operation and humanitarian response since the mid-1990s, and the type continues to fly daily missions worldwide.
