C-2 Greyhound Poster - Carrier Onboard Delivery Aircraft

The Grumman C-2 Greyhound occupies one of the most unglamorous but operationally critical roles in naval aviation: delivering people, parts, mail, and high-priority cargo to aircraft carriers at sea. Based on the airframe of the E-2 Hawkeye with a widened fuselage, cargo ramp, and dramatically different mission, the C-2 has been performing Carrier Onboard Delivery (COD) operations since 1966, landing on carrier flight decks in all weather conditions, day and night, with all the arrested-landing demands of any carrier aircraft, but loaded with cargo rather than weapons. The aircraft's fold-flat wings and rear loading ramp allow it to operate from carriers and deliver items as large as aircraft engines that otherwise could only be transferred at port.

The C-2A fleet was modernized through the 1990s and has continued operating far beyond its originally planned service life. As of the mid-2020s, the Greyhound is being replaced on the COD mission by the CMV-22B Osprey, a conversion of the tiltrotor platform that offers greater speed and range but trades the C-2's cargo ramp for a smaller side door. The transition means the C-2 Greyhound is in its final years of US Navy service, making this an opportune moment to document and remember a workhorse that kept carrier strike groups supplied for six decades.
