C-27 Spartan Poster - Light Tactical Transport

The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a medium tactical transport that occupies the gap between the light utility helicopter and the much larger C-130, a niche that has proven operationally important and politically contested. Developed as an evolution of the G.222 by the Italian manufacturer Alenia (now Leonardo), the C-27J shares its engine and propeller system with the C-130J Super Hercules, a deliberate design choice that simplifies logistics and training. The US Army acquired C-27Js to provide dedicated direct support airlift for ground forces, reducing dependence on C-130s for smaller, time-sensitive cargo and personnel movements.

The C-27J's US military career was complicated by interservice rivalry. The Army's C-27Js were transferred to the Air Force, which subsequently divested most of them, a decision that drew congressional criticism and was partially reversed. Today, C-27Js continue to serve with the Air Force in special operations and personnel recovery roles, and the type has proven highly successful with international operators including Italy, Greece, Lithuania, and others. Its combination of short-field performance, modern avionics, and C-130J-common systems makes it a genuinely capable platform for the missions it performs.
