C-5 Super Galaxy Poster - Strategic Heavy Airlift

The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy is the largest aircraft in the United States military inventory and one of the largest in the world. Since entering service in 1970, it has been the backbone of the Air Force's strategic heavy-lift capability, the platform called upon when something needs to move that simply cannot fit in anything else. Its cargo bay measures 121 feet long, 19 feet wide, and 13.5 feet tall, capable of carrying two M1 Abrams main battle tanks, a fully assembled CH-47 Chinook helicopter, or 270 fully equipped troops. The visor nose and rear cargo ramp allow simultaneous loading and unloading from both ends, dramatically reducing ground time.

The current operational fleet consists of C-5M Super Galaxy aircraft, a comprehensive modernization that replaced the original TF39 engines with modern GE CF6-80C2 turbofans, upgraded avionics, and improved reliability throughout. The upgrade transformed a platform notorious for maintenance difficulties into one of the most capable and reliable airlifters in the world. C-5Ms have mission capability rates above 75%, a dramatic improvement over earlier variants. The Super Galaxy continues to move outsized cargo that no other US military aircraft can accommodate, and with the modernization program complete, the fleet is expected to remain in service through the 2040s.
