The Boeing CH-47 Chinook has been lifting the US Army's heaviest loads since 1962 and shows no sign of being replaced. Its distinctive tandem rotor configuration, two large rotors, one forward and one aft, rotating in opposite directions, eliminates the need for a tail rotor while providing exceptional lifting capability relative to the aircraft's size. The Chinook serves with the armies of over 20 nations and has demonstrated a remarkable ability to operate in extreme environments, from the 10,000-foot valleys of Afghanistan to the heat and humidity of the Pacific that challenge lighter helicopters. Its combination of payload, range, and versatility has made it genuinely irreplaceable.
