The Boeing E-4B "Nightwatch" is one of the most important and least-discussed aircraft in the United States military inventory. Four exist. One is always on alert. Known unofficially as the "Doomsday Plane," the E-4B is the National Airborne Operations Center, the platform from which the President, Secretary of Defense, or their successors would command US nuclear and conventional forces in the event that ground-based command facilities were destroyed or rendered inoperable. Built on a 747-200 airframe, the E-4B is equipped with hardened communications systems capable of reaching every element of the US nuclear triad under even the most severe electromagnetic pulse conditions. It can operate continuously for 72 hours or more with aerial refueling.

The E-4B entered service in the late 1970s and has been extensively modified to maintain its relevance against evolving threats. Its specific capabilities are classified, but known systems include satellite communications, high-frequency radio, ultra-low frequency transmitters for communicating with submerged ballistic missile submarines, and a trailing wire antenna for communications that can penetrate seawater. The aircraft shadowed President George W. Bush on September 11, 2001, and an E-4B has orbited over or near Washington during every major national security event since. In 2024, an E-4B was photographed departing Washington during a period of elevated international tension, a reminder that this aircraft represents the final backstop of American command authority.
