The General Dynamics (now Lockheed Martin) F-16 Fighting Falcon is the most widely produced Western fighter aircraft of the jet age, with over 4,600 built and service with more than 25 nations. Designed in the 1970s as a lightweight, cost-effective complement to the F-15, the F-16's single-engine, highly agile airframe with a reclined seat and a frameless bubble canopy giving near-360-degree visibility established a new standard for dogfighting capability. Its fly-by-wire flight control system, among the first in production fighter aircraft, allowed designers to make the airframe deliberately unstable for maximum agility while the computers maintained safe flight.

The F-16 has evolved dramatically from its original lightweight day fighter concept into a capable multirole platform. Modern F-16C/D Block 70/72 aircraft, the current production standard, carry AN/APG-83 AESA radars, modern electronic warfare suites, and a full complement of precision guided weapons. F-16s have seen combat in virtually every major conflict of the past four decades, from the Arab-Israeli wars to the Gulf War, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Iraq, and beyond. As of 2025, production continues for export customers, and the F-16 will remain in frontline service with the Air Force National Guard alongside newer platforms for years to come. Ukraine has also received F-16s from European allies, bringing the type into combat over Eastern Europe for the first time.
