The Eurocopter (now Airbus Helicopters) MH-65 Dolphin is the US Coast Guard's primary short-range rescue helicopter, operating from cutters and air stations along the coasts, Great Lakes, and inland waterways of the United States. Based on the AS365 Dauphin design, the Dolphin was selected by the Coast Guard in the early 1980s and has since become the service's most numerically significant rotary wing asset. Its fenestrated tail rotor, the Fenestron, a shrouded multi-blade tail rotor housed within the tail structure, provides quieter operation and improved safety compared to conventional exposed tail rotors, an important feature when operating around crew members in the water during rescue operations.

Coast Guard MH-65s regularly perform some of the most demanding rescue operations in American aviation, night hoisting in rough seas, navigating in zero-visibility conditions, and hovering precisely at low altitude over wave-swept decks. The Dolphin fleet has been extensively modernized through the Deepwater program, receiving new engines, glass cockpit avionics, and improved rescue equipment. Ongoing upgrades include turbine engine replacement to improve power and reliability. The MH-65 has saved thousands of lives since entering Coast Guard service and remains the definitive US maritime short-range rescue helicopter.
