MQ-1 Predator Poster - Army Reconnaissance & Strike UAS
The General Atomics MQ-1 Predator is the aircraft that defined the era of unmanned combat aviation, the platform that transformed the UAS from a reconnaissance tool into a weapon and, in doing so, permanently changed how the United States conducts military operations. Originally designed in the early 1990s as a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) reconnaissance platform, the Predator entered service with the CIA and Air Force in 1995 flying unarmed surveillance missions over Bosnia. What followed over the next decade was a transformation: the integration of Hellfire missiles, the transition from experimental to operational, and the development of a new doctrine of persistent surveillance and precision strike from unmanned platforms operated via satellite link from bases thousands of miles from the target.
The Predator's combat record is inseparable from the global counterterrorism campaigns of the 2000s and 2010s. MQ-1s flew countless missions over Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and Pakistan, conducting both reconnaissance and direct action strikes against high-value targets. The aircraft's distinctive profile: narrow fuselage, long straight wings, bulbous sensor nose, inverted V-tail, became one of the defining visual symbols of 21st century warfare. Its successor, the larger and more capable MQ-9 Reaper, entered service in 2007 and the Air Force formally retired the MQ-1 in March 2018 after 23 years of service, with final combat operations concluded in 2017. Though retired from US service, the Predator continues to fly with several international operators, and its legacy endures in every unmanned strike system that followed it.
