MQ-8 Fire Scout Poster - Autonomous Naval Helicopter UAS

The Northrop Grumman MQ-8 Fire Scout is the US Navy's primary shipboard autonomous helicopter unmanned aerial system, a vertical takeoff and landing UAS designed to operate from destroyers, frigates, and littoral combat ships, extending the maritime commander's sensor reach beyond the horizon without putting a pilot in harm's way. The MQ-8B variant is based on the Schweizer 333 light helicopter airframe, while the more capable MQ-8C uses the Bell 407 airframe for significantly greater payload and endurance. Both variants are capable of autonomous launch, recovery, and navigation, requiring only mission planning and monitoring from operators aboard the ship.

The Fire Scout's primary missions are intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance in support of surface warfare and anti-submarine warfare operations, though it can also be equipped to carry weapons including laser-guided rockets. Its ability to fly long-duration missions over open ocean, the MQ-8C can remain airborne for over 11 hours, provides ship commanders with a persistent overhead sensor capability previously unavailable on small surface combatants. The Navy has deployed Fire Scouts operationally from Freedom-class and Independence-class Littoral Combat Ships, as well as from Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigates, and the system has accumulated operational experience in the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf. As the Navy evolves its unmanned surface and air vehicle concepts for distributed maritime operations, the MQ-8 represents an early and important demonstration of truly shipboard-organic UAS capability.
