P-3 Orion Poster - Maritime Patrol & ASW Aircraft

The Lockheed P-3 Orion entered service with the US Navy in 1962 as an anti-submarine warfare and maritime patrol aircraft, and has since become one of the most widely operated military aircraft in history, serving with over a dozen nations. Based on the commercial Lockheed Electra turboprop airliner, the P-3 was designed for long endurance patrol over open ocean, its four Allison T56 turboprop engines providing exceptional range and the ability to shut down one or two engines to extend patrol time on station. The distinctive ventral magnetic anomaly detector boom extending from the tail detects the magnetic signature of submerged submarines.

Although the P-3 is being replaced in US Navy service by the P-8 Poseidon, the Orion has accumulated one of the longest and most distinguished operational records of any maritime patrol aircraft, hunting Soviet submarines throughout the Cold War, supporting surface warfare operations, and conducting signals intelligence collection. Many international operators continue to fly P-3s, and the aircraft remains in limited US Navy reserve and foreign military service. The Orion set the operational template for multi-mission maritime patrol that the P-8 now carries forward.
