RQ-21 Blackjack Poster - Naval Small Tactical UAS

The Boeing Insitu RQ-21A Blackjack is a small tactical unmanned aircraft system designed specifically for shipboard and expeditionary naval operations, replacing the ScanEagle in the Navy and Marine Corps inventory. Like the ScanEagle that preceded it, the Blackjack uses the pneumatic catapult launch and SkyHook wire recovery system that eliminates runway requirements, allowing it to operate from destroyer-sized ships and from small forward operating locations ashore. Its greater size compared to the ScanEagle accommodates more sophisticated sensors and improved payload capacity, while retaining the shipboard operational concept that has proven effective in maritime patrol operations.

The RQ-21 carries an electro-optical/infrared/laser designator sensor package and has communications relay capability, providing the naval task force commander with persistent surveillance over a radius of approximately 50 nautical miles. Marine Corps expeditionary units have integrated the Blackjack into amphibious operations, using it for reconnaissance of landing zones and coastal areas prior to assault. The system's ability to operate from virtually any vessel with a modest deck space makes it a flexible asset for the distributed maritime operations concepts the Navy is developing for the Western Pacific.
