T-6 Texan II Poster - Primary Pilot Training Aircraft

The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II is the primary training aircraft for both US Air Force and Navy pilots, the aircraft in which virtually every American military aviator today learned to fly. Selected through the Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) competition in 1995, the T-6A replaced both the T-37 Tweet in Air Force service and the T-34C Mentor in Navy service, providing a single common primary trainer across the services. Based on the Swiss Pilatus PC-9 design but extensively modified for American requirements, the T-6 introduces student pilots to the fundamentals of instrument flying, formation operations, and basic aerobatics before they transition to advanced trainers and eventually operational aircraft.

The T-6 has been a remarkable export success alongside its primary military role, with over 30 nations operating the Texan II in various configurations. The T-6C variant adds a glass cockpit more representative of modern front-line aircraft, improving the training value of the system. As of 2025, virtually every Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps aviator flying advanced fighters, bombers, and patrol aircraft first turned blades in a T-6. The aircraft is expected to remain in US service through at least the 2030s, with no immediate successor program underway.
