The Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk is the backbone of US Army aviation and the most widely operated utility military helicopter in the Western world. Entering service in 1979 as the replacement for the UH-1 Huey in the assault transport role, the Black Hawk has expanded far beyond its original mission into nearly every role military helicopters perform: medical evacuation, command and control, special operations infiltration, external lift, electronic warfare, and naval anti-submarine warfare in its SH-60 Seahawk naval variant. Over 4,000 have been built, serving with the US military and over 40 nations.

The Black Hawk's combination of troop-carrying capacity (11 fully equipped soldiers), respectable speed (193 mph), and ability to operate from relatively confined landing zones made it the standard for utility helicopter design globally. Its survivability features, including a crashworthy fuel system and airframe designed to protect the crew in hard landings, represented a generational improvement over the Huey it replaced. The UH-60M, the current primary variant, features upgraded engines, improved rotor blades, and modern digital avionics. The Army is developing a Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) to eventually replace the Black Hawk in the assault role, with the Bell V-280 Valor selected in 2022, but Black Hawks will remain in service in large numbers for decades as that transition occurs.
