The Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit is perhaps the most extraordinary aircraft ever to enter operational service. A pure flying wing, no fuselage, no tail, just a continuous blended shape designed from the outset to defeat radar, the B-2 represents the apex of Cold War black programs, developed throughout the 1980s in near-total secrecy and revealed to the public in 1988. Its fly-by-wire flight control system manages the inherent instability of the tailless design through thousands of tiny control surface adjustments per second, making the pilot's inputs feel deceptively conventional. Entering service in 1997 at a program unit cost that has never been publicly confirmed but is estimated at over $2 billion per aircraft, the B-2 is the most expensive combat aircraft ever built.

Only 21 B-2s were produced, a fleet so small and so valuable that each aircraft is individually named for an American state. They are based exclusively at Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri, where they are housed in specialized climate-controlled hangars to protect their radar-absorbing coatings. Despite their rarity, B-2s have been used in combat operations from Kosovo to Libya to Afghanistan and Iraq, typically flying non-stop round-trip missions of 30+ hours. The aircraft can carry either conventional precision-guided munitions or nuclear gravity bombs, including the B61-12, and can deliver 40,000 pounds of ordnance, including the 30,000-pound Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) bunker buster, with stunning accuracy. As the B-21 Raider enters service, the B-2 fleet will eventually retire, but it continues flying operational missions today.
