The Sikorsky CH-53K King Stallion is the most powerful helicopter ever built in the Western world. Entering service with the US Marine Corps in 2023 as the replacement for the CH-53E Super Stallion, the King Stallion can lift 27,000 pounds of external cargo, three times the capacity of the CH-46 Sea Knight it ultimately traces its lineage through, and more than any previous US military helicopter. This capability is not academic: the Marine Corps' ability to project amphibious power ashore depends fundamentally on having helicopters that can lift the heavy equipment: artillery, vehicles, and bulldozers that fighting forces need once they're on the beach.

The CH-53K achieves its extraordinary capability through three General Electric T408 turboshaft engines, advanced composite rotor blades, and fly-by-wire flight controls that reduce pilot workload while improving handling characteristics in challenging conditions. Unlike its predecessor, the King Stallion can operate effectively in high-altitude and high-temperature environments that degrade the performance of conventional helicopters significantly. The program has been years in development and the transition from the CH-53E is ongoing, with the Marine Corps intending to field the full CH-53K fleet through the 2020s. When fully operational, it will give US amphibious forces a heavy-lift capability without precedent.
