E-2 Hawkeye Poster - Carrier Airborne Early Warning

The Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye is the only fixed-wing airborne early warning aircraft specifically designed for carrier operations, and it has been the eyes of every US carrier strike group since 1964. Its most distinctive feature, the 24-foot diameter rotating radar dome mounted above the fuselage, called the rotodome, houses an APS-145 radar capable of detecting airborne targets at ranges exceeding 300 miles and tracking over 2,000 contacts simultaneously. The E-2 functions as a flying battle management center, providing the air wing commander with a comprehensive picture of the airspace around the carrier group and directing intercepts in real time.

The current E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, which entered service in 2014, represents a complete redesign of the radar and mission systems around the AN/APY-9 UHF active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, a quantum leap in detection capability, particularly against low-observable threats and over-land clutter. The E-2D can also serve as an aerial refueling tanker with a buddy store, and its Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) allows it to share tracking data directly with surface ships and other aircraft for integrated air defense. The Hawkeye is expected to remain the cornerstone of carrier-based airborne early warning through at least 2045, with continued upgrades planned throughout that period.
