The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is widely regarded as the most capable air superiority fighter ever built. A product of the Air Force's Advanced Tactical Fighter program, the F-22 combines fifth-generation stealth shaping with supercruise capability, the ability to fly at supersonic speeds (Mach 1.5+) without using fuel-intensive afterburner, and extremely high maneuverability driven by three-dimensional thrust vectoring nozzles. Its AN/APG-77 AESA radar and integrated avionics provide sensor fusion that gives pilots a battlefield picture unavailable in any preceding fighter. The Raptor is designed to enter contested airspace, achieve air superiority, and leave before adversary aircraft are even aware of its presence.

Only 187 production F-22s were built, a fraction of the 750 originally planned, with the program cancelled on cost grounds in 2009. This has proven a difficult legacy: the Air Force now operates a small fleet of extremely capable but aging aircraft that cannot be easily replaced. F-22s have been employed in combat strike operations against ISIS in Syria and Iraq, demonstrating their precision strike capability alongside their primary air superiority mission. Modernization programs continue, including AESA radar upgrades and integration of new weapons. As the F-22 ages toward eventual replacement by a next-generation platform, it remains without peer in its primary mission.
