KC-46 Pegasus Poster - Next-Gen Aerial Refueling Tanker

The Boeing KC-46A Pegasus is the US Air Force's newest aerial refueling tanker, selected in 2011 to begin replacing the aging KC-135 fleet after a decade-long acquisition competition that became one of the most contested defense procurements in American history. Based on the Boeing 767-200ER commercial airframe, the KC-46 carries 212,000 pounds of transferable fuel, more than any previous Air Force tanker, and can refuel using both the boom system for Air Force aircraft and a hose-and-drogue system for Navy and allied aircraft, making it more versatile than the KC-135 it replaces.

The KC-46 program has been marked by significant technical challenges, particularly with its Remote Vision System, the camera and digital display system the boom operator uses to guide the refueling boom instead of lying prone with direct visual contact as in the KC-135. Multiple developmental problems required redesign, and the Air Force declared the first aircraft delivered as Category 1 deficiencies remained unresolved, an unusual step reflecting the severity of the issues. Despite these challenges, the KC-46 has achieved initial operational capability and continues accumulating flight hours. Deliveries continue, and with over 100 aircraft now delivered, the Pegasus is becoming an increasingly important element of Air Force refueling capacity alongside the KC-135 as that older fleet gradually retires.
