The MD Helicopters MH-6 Little Bird is the smallest and arguably most distinctive aircraft in US special operations aviation, a compact, nimble helicopter flown exclusively by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), the unit known as the "Night Stalkers." Derived from the commercial Hughes 500 design, the MH-6 is used for clandestine infiltration and exfiltration of small special operations teams, typically inserting operators via external platform benches or fast-rope rather than landing. Its small size allows it to operate in urban environments and confined spaces where larger helicopters cannot maneuver, and it can land on building rooftops or other restricted areas that would be inaccessible to conventional rotary wing platforms.

The MH-6's combat companion is the AH-6, an armed attack variant carrying miniguns, rocket pods, and Hellfire missiles, often operating in direct support of MH-6 insertion missions. Both variants were famously employed and lost during the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993, events depicted in the book and film "Black Hawk Down." The Night Stalkers continue to operate the MH/AH-6 fleet for classified missions globally, with the aircraft's compact dimensions, quiet rotor systems, and night vision goggle compatibility making it uniquely suited to direct action and special reconnaissance operations in complex terrain.
