The General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper is the most combat-used unmanned strike system in the history of warfare. Developed as the successor to the MQ-1 Predator, the Reaper is vastly more capable: larger, faster, with a turboprop engine replacing the Predator's piston, and carrying a weapons load including Hellfire missiles, GBU-12 Paveway II laser-guided bombs, and GBU-38 JDAMs that approaches that of a light attack aircraft. Since entering service in 2007, MQ-9s have flown hundreds of thousands of combat hours over Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and elsewhere, conducting reconnaissance, direct action strikes, and close air support for ground forces.

The Reaper's extended endurance, over 24 hours on station, and its ability to be controlled via satellite link from bases in the continental United States fundamentally changed how the US conducts persistent surveillance and targeted strike operations. Specific operations that have used MQ-9s include the 2020 strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani and numerous other high-value target engagements. The platform continues to be upgraded with improved sensors, communications, and weapons integration. As air defense environments improve globally, the Air Force is developing concepts for operating Reapers in more contested airspace, and successor concepts are under development, but the MQ-9 remains the backbone of US unmanned strike operations.
