The AeroVironment RQ-11 Raven is the most widely operated small unmanned aircraft system in US military history, a hand-launched reconnaissance platform so small it fits in a soldier's backpack and so simple to operate that infantry soldiers receive basic qualification training in hours rather than weeks. Weighing just 4.2 pounds with a 4.5-foot wingspan, the Raven is launched by hand into the wind and recovered by either a controlled landing in an open area or by hand. Its electric motor is quiet enough to be difficult to detect from the ground, and its cameras, electro-optical and infrared, stream video in real time to a handheld ground control station.

Over 19,000 Ravens have been produced for US and allied forces, making it by far the most numerically significant unmanned aircraft in the American military inventory. It has seen service with US Army, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Special Operations units, as well as dozens of allied nations. The Raven provides platoon and company level commanders with organic reconnaissance capability that was previously only available through battalion or higher assets, the ability to look over the next hill, confirm the contents of a suspicious building, or maintain surveillance on a route without risking personnel. The system's simplicity and low cost have made it a model for the proliferation of small UAS capability throughout the joint force.
