RQ-170 Sentinel Poster - Stealth Reconnaissance UAS

The Lockheed Martin RQ-170 Sentinel is among the most secret aircraft in US service, a low-observable (stealth) unmanned reconnaissance aircraft whose existence was not officially acknowledged until one crashed in Iran in December 2011, giving the world its first clear look at the design. A flying wing with a broad, bat-like planform and no vertical surfaces, the RQ-170 is operated by the Air Force's 30th Reconnaissance Squadron from Kandahar Airfield and other classified locations, conducting intelligence collection missions in denied or contested airspace where conventional ISR platforms would be detected and potentially destroyed.

The RQ-170 is believed to have been used extensively over Iran monitoring the country's nuclear program, and it was reportedly overhead when US Navy SEALs conducted the raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad, Pakistan in May 2011, providing live video feed to the White House Situation Room. The Iranian recovery of an apparently largely intact RQ-170 in 2011 was a significant intelligence loss, with Iran claiming to have reverse-engineered elements of the design. The Air Force has provided minimal information about the system's capabilities, but its flying wing stealth configuration and the missions attributed to it indicate a sophisticated precision surveillance capability operating at high altitude in denied airspace.
