The Northrop Grumman RQ-4 Global Hawk is the largest unmanned aircraft system in the US military inventory and among the highest-flying, cruising at altitudes above 60,000 feet, above the service ceiling of most other aircraft and above the reach of most surface-to-air missile systems. Designed as a strategic reconnaissance platform capable of covering 40,000 square miles of terrain per day with its integrated sensor suite, the Global Hawk can carry electro-optical, infrared, and synthetic aperture radar sensors, providing persistent wide-area surveillance that manned aircraft cannot match economically. Its endurance exceeds 30 hours, allowing it to survey entire regions in a single sortie.

The Global Hawk has flown operational missions since 2001, supporting operations in Afghanistan, Iraq, and across multiple other theaters. In 2019, Iran shot down a US Navy RQ-4A over the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a significant international incident and demonstrating that even high-altitude UAS are not immune to advanced air defense systems. The Air Force has debated retiring the Block 30 variant on cost grounds, citing maintenance challenges, while retaining Block 40 aircraft for the maritime surveillance mission that the MQ-4C Triton also performs. Despite these challenges, the Global Hawk's strategic ISR capability remains in active demand.
