The AAI (now L3Harris) RQ-7 Shadow is the US Army's primary tactical unmanned aircraft system at the brigade level, the system that gives ground combat commanders their own organic overhead ISR capability without depending on theater assets. Designed to be operated by Army aviation units embedded with maneuver brigades, the Shadow provides real-time video and intelligence at ranges up to 125 kilometers, flying for up to nine hours on a single mission. It is launched from a trailer-mounted pneumatic catapult and recovered via an arresting wire system, requiring no prepared runway and allowing deployment from small forward operating positions.

The Shadow has been continuously upgraded since entering service in 2002, with the 200 series introducing greater endurance, a satellite communications capability, and improved sensors. It has accumulated millions of flight hours across deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other theaters, becoming one of the most operationally mature tactical UAS systems in the world. The Army is developing next-generation tactical UAS systems under the Future Tactical UAS program to eventually replace the Shadow, but the RQ-7 continues to provide brigade-level ISR capability as that program matures.
