The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) T-45 Goshawk is the only jet aircraft in the US military specifically designed for carrier qualification training, the demanding process by which Navy and Marine Corps pilots learn to land aboard aircraft carriers. Based on the British Aerospace Hawk trainer but extensively redesigned with a stronger airframe, arresting hook, catapult attachment fittings, and folding wings for carrier storage, the T-45 gives student naval aviators their first experience of arrested landings and catapult launches in an aircraft designed to absorb the punishing loads involved. This qualification is among the most demanding in military aviation, and the T-45 is the platform that makes it possible at scale.

The T-45 replaced the TA-4J Skyhawk in the advanced naval training role and has been training carrier pilots since 1991. A glass cockpit upgrade introduced the T-45C variant with avionics more representative of modern front-line carrier aircraft, improving training relevance. The Navy has been evaluating next-generation advanced jet trainer options as the T-45 fleet ages, but as of 2025 the Goshawk continues to be the platform that qualifies every Navy and Marine Corps carrier aviator. The aircraft's distinctive carrier modifications: robust landing gear, hook, and wing-fold mechanisms, are clearly visible in its silhouette and distinguish it immediately from land-based trainer designs.
