The Bell Boeing CV-22 Osprey is operated exclusively by Air Force Special Operations Command and represents one of the most technologically ambitious aircraft ever to enter operational service. A tiltrotor, capable of taking off and landing vertically like a helicopter, then tilting its enormous proprotors forward to fly like a turboprop airplane, the Osprey was conceived to solve a problem made painfully clear by the failed 1980 Iran hostage rescue mission: the US needed a long-range infiltration platform that didn't depend on conventional runways. The V-22 program spent over a decade in development, survived multiple fatal accidents and program cancellations, and eventually delivered a platform with genuinely transformative capabilities.

The CV-22B's combination of helicopter flexibility and fixed-wing speed and range; cruise speed of approximately 280 mph, range exceeding 1,000 miles without refueling, gives special operations forces access to targets that were previously beyond reach without staging through vulnerable forward bases. It can be air-refueled in flight, dramatically extending its range further. The aircraft has matured significantly from its troubled early years, with reliability and maintenance hours per flight hour improving substantially through operational experience. CV-22s have supported special operations missions across multiple theaters, and the introduction of the CV-22B Block 20 with upgraded systems continues to improve the platform's capability.
