A heavily modified variant of the SH-3 Sea King anti-submarine warfare helicopter, the VH-3D served as Marine One from the Kennedy administration through the Obama years, its distinctive olive drab and white livery and the seal of the United States Marine Corps on its nose becoming among the most photographed images in American political life. The Sea King's presidential career included some of the most consequential moments in modern American history. It was aboard a VH-3 that President Nixon departed the White House on August 9, 1974, following his resignation, the only time in American history a president has left office in that manner. The aircraft has carried every president from John F. Kennedy onward to Camp David, to Andrews Air Force Base, and to naval vessels offshore, accumulating a record of service that no successor can replicate through sheer duration and historical weight. Retired from presidential service with the introduction of the VH-92A Patriot in 2020, after 58 years of White House duty, surviving VH-3Ds have been preserved in presidential libraries and aviation museums, fitting monuments to a helicopter that witnessed more American history than almost any other aircraft ever built.
